March 15, 2005 The Seal Hunt / Cheap Vegan Eats From muffins to megaphones, this show offers a hearty helping of local and national-based activism. First we'll hear from Rebbeca Aldworth, Humane Society of the United States' Director of Canadian Wildlife Issues, who will provide an overview of the Canadian seal hunt and explain HSUS' controversial campaign, "Boycott Canadian Seafood," which they hope will curb the slaughter. Then we'll connect with Pat Tohill, Campaigns and Communications Manager for World Society for the Protection of Animals. Pat will tell us about how Torontonians make their voices heard on this issue. (Protests are beginning tomorrow. Check out http://www.wspa.ca/sealhunt/sealrally.html) Then the fine folks from Radical Roots will drop by to give us the scoop (the ladle?) on their worker-run non-profit food alternative, which offers a wide selection of really cheap and tasty vegan fare on the U of Toronto campus. We'll end the program with a free serving from the People's Potato, the completely amazing vegan soup kitchen at Concordia University, which was established in 1999 to address student poverty. The kitchen now serves over 500 people daily, both students and community members. If that weren't enough, the Potato has also published a book called Vegan on a Shoestring.
